8 WordPress plugins worth removing from your site

Eight types of WordPress plugins I often find in site audits that slow pages down, create security risks or confuse Google, and what to use instead.

When I audited 47 WordPress sites, these eight kinds of plugins kept turning up. Each one slows the site, adds risk or confuses Google.

An abandoned contact form plugin

It still works, so nobody notices it stopped getting security patches. Use the built-in block or a form plugin updated in the last six months.

A heavy social sharing plugin

Floating share bars can add 400KB and a dozen requests, which hurts Core Web Vitals on mobile. Use your theme's sharing buttons or a lightweight option under 10KB.

A slider that loads jQuery everywhere

Revolution Slider and similar plugins load all of jQuery even for a simple fade, which can add over a second to mobile load time. Block patterns or the cover block usually do the job.

Two SEO plugins at once

Running Yoast and Rank Math together creates duplicate meta tags and conflicting schema. Keep one, delete the other and clear your cache.

A backup plugin that quietly fails

Many free versions report success but stop working past 100MB. Download your latest backup and try a restore. If you can't, replace the plugin.

An outdated page builder

Old versions of Elementor, WPBakery and Divi add thousands of lines of inline CSS. Update to the latest version or move to blocks, and your LCP should improve.

A statistics plugin sending data elsewhere

Some free analytics plugins send your data to unknown servers. Use server logs or a privacy-focused tool that keeps data on your host.

A badly configured cache plugin

Preloading, aggressive minification and broken defer settings can make a site slower than no cache at all. Start again with only the options you understand.

Review your plugin list a few times a year so this kind of clutter doesn't build up again.
